06 May When Progress Feels Too Slow
Bismillah
There are moments in the Hifdh journey when the heart feels heavy. You sit with the Qur’an, recite the same ayah again and again, and wonder why it isn’t settling. You look at others who seem to move faster, and a quiet voice whispers: “Maybe I’m not cut out for this.”
This discouragement is real. It often comes not from a lack of effort, but from the weight of expectation. As adults, we carry many responsibilities. Our time is divided, our energy stretched, and our progress naturally slower than we imagined. Yet slow progress is not wasted progress. Every ayah you struggle with is still worship, still a step closer to the Qur’an, still a seed planted in your heart.
I once worked with a sister who felt defeated because she had memorized only half a page in two weeks. She compared herself to younger students who could complete a page in a day. Together, we reframed her perspective. That half‑page was not “less.” It was her half‑page, carved out of a life filled with family, work, and service. It was her offering to Allah, and it carried the weight of sincerity.
She later told me, “I realized my journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. My pace is mine, and Allah knows the effort behind it.”
This is the reminder many of us need: the Qur’an does not measure you by speed. It measures you by presence. It asks you to keep returning, even when progress feels slow.
So how do we cope with discouragement? Begin by shifting the lens. Instead of asking, “How much have I memorized?” ask, “How often am I showing up?” Value consistency over quantity. Protect small, regular moments with the Qur’an, even if they feel modest. And most importantly, release comparison. Your journey is yours alone.
Dear sisters, slow progress is still progress. The Qur’an was revealed over twenty‑three years, verse by verse, moment by moment. Your Hifdh can unfold in the same gentle rhythm. What matters is not how quickly you arrive, but how faithfully you walk.
