31 Oct The One Mistake Every Hifdh Student Makes (And How to Fix It)
After 20+ years of teaching hifdhul Quran, I’ve worked with all kinds of students: the fast memorizers, the slow-but-steady ones, the perfectionists, the procrastinators, and the ones who just need a little push. But there’s one mistake almost every student makes at some point – and it’s not forgetting a verse or mixing up a surah.
It’s neglecting revision.
I know, I know. Revision isn’t exciting. It’s not new. It feels like you’re just repeating what you already know. But here’s the truth: memorizing without revising is like pouring water into a cup with a hole at the bottom. You’ll keep pouring, but it won’t stay.
Here’s what I tell my students:
1. Memorizing is only half the job.
If you memorized a page today, great. But if you don’t revise it tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that… it’s gone. Your brain needs repetition to move information from short-term to long-term memory. That’s just how it works.
2. Build a revision system.
Don’t rely on “I’ll revise when I have time.” You won’t. Life gets busy. Instead, create a schedule:
- Revise yesterday’s page.
- Revise one juz you’ve already memorized.
- Recite one surah from memory during salah.
Even 15 minutes a day makes a difference.
3. Don’t chase quantity over quality.
I’ve seen students rush to finish 5 pages a week, only to forget half of it by the end of the month. It’s better to memorize 2 pages and revise them well than to rush through 5 and lose them.
4. Parents: ask about revision, not just progress.
If your child says, “I memorized 3 pages this week,” ask, “How many did you revise?” Celebrate consistency, not just speed.
5. Use salah as your testing ground.
Recite your hifdh in your prayers. It’s the best way to test fluency, confidence, and retention. If you stumble, that’s a sign you need more revision.
Hifdh isn’t just about finishing the Qur’an. It’s about carrying it : in your heart, your habits, and your life. And that only happens through revision.
So if you’re a student, a parent, or even a teacher: make revision your priority. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the secret to success.
