16 Mar Reflections on Sabr
Reflecting on some of the verses from the Qur’an & Hadith about the virtue of patience, I realized that we are being reminded to be patient through our individual trials in this life but also in a general sense with making it through this life to the next.
We need to maintain both perspectives to endure. The immediate patience or sabrun jamil which should occur at the strike of any calamity according to the Hadith, is like a spiritual anesthesia that numbs the pain or at the very least makes it tolerable to bear. The other enduring patience is like a gradual withdrawal from our dependence on dunya. Slowly, we loosen the ties that bond us to material things, relationships, false hope, etc. Both of these types of patience are necessary to just stay the course until we’re on the other side, free from the pain and turmoil of this dunya at last in sha Allah. To get there we need prayer and humility. We need to beseech Allah ﷻ every day throughout the day and fortify our hearts so that when the storms of life hit, our souls are retrofitted to withstand the shock. We also need to practice humility, to lower our heads before our Creator and admit our utter dependence on Him, and to crush our ego & destroy our worldly desires by realizing the inevitability of our looming end and departure from this realm to the next.
May Allah increase us all in patience, prayer, & humility, in sha Allah. Amin!
