What it means to be conscious of Allah SWT

What it means to be conscious of Allah SWT

Assalamu alaykum,

Being conscious of our Creator SWT is a primary theme of  The Noble Quran. And with the upcoming Ramadan, it is a wonderful time to reflect upon and make the necessary changes to our lives, both within and externally.

This post by sister Aliyah highlights it beautifully:

Third verse of Surah Baqarah, Allah begins to describe the mutaqeen – those who are conscious of Allah.

He (azza wa jaal) describes them as those ‘who believe in the unseen, perform prayer and spend in charity from what We have provided them.’ I’m sure you’ve read this verse a zillion times.

I don’t know about you but perhaps when reading this verse, the part that hits you the most is the latter part – and you’re given a mental kick to give more in sadaqa.

Recently, I read this verse differently and paid more attention to the first part … ‘who believe in the unseen.’

Reading this first part, one kind of mentally checks the box: Yup, alhamdulillah I’m Muslim. I believe in the unseen. Check.

But what does it really mean to believe in the unseen on a day to day basis when your very human soul witnesses very human days laden with tests, challenges, sin, negativity, arguments, fights, worry, anxiety and oh my, the list can go on and on!

What does it mean to believe in the unseen during the challenging nature of day to day life in this tiring dunya?

Belief in the unseen means believing in the things we can’t see or know through our physical senses. But we believe in them because Allah and His Messenger have told us. This is what distinguishes us as believers. This belief includes EVERYTHING Allah and His Messenger have told us about the unseen – the past, the future, events in the Hereafter and… about Allah Himself.

Belief in the unseen means believing in Allah’s Divine Attributes as fact, as solid truth. No maybes. No percentage lower than 100%. Complete absolute belief in His Attributes just as you are certain that you are alive and that the sun rose this morning.

Belief in the unseen is when you believe that though you’re full of sin, He is most certainly The Most Forgiving – ready, willing and wanting to forgive you and thereafter, wants you to move forward in your life!

Belief in the unseen is handing over that situation that interrupts your sleep at night, to The One who is The Best Disposer of Affairs. Believing that even if He has written for you that which your heart does not want, that you believe it is most certainly what is best for you. For He knows you and your future.

Belief in the unseen is placing all the perception and rejection from fellow human folk aside, realising you are the recipient of endless beautiful overflowing love from The Most Loving who loves you with a love that is manifest – shown to you. Not just through words. But True Love through Action.

We yearn to be of the mutaqeen. We might have an endless list of worship we feel we need to engage in which might qualify us of such a lofty status.

But maybe, just maybe – the mutaqeen are those who are simple struggling slaves; full of mistakes but yet have a solid belief in the Exquisite and Perfect Attributes of The First and The Last; who they know is unseen but live and breathe believing with absolute certainty that He is most definitely ever present in their daily lives.
