12 Aug Advice for those devoted to The Quran
Whilst in Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, I was fortunate to be in the company of Shaykh Dr Abdullah Al Jaarullah, one of the senior teachers of Qira’ah and tajweed in al-Masjid al Nabawi, and an exemplary student of Sh Ibrahim al Akhdar and Sh Ali al Hudhaify. Alongside being a teacher of Quran, Shaykh Al Jaarullah is a medical doctor.
Shaykh advised me of 5 things which I thought may benefit those reading this, so I have decided to share them:
1) Closeness to Quran – No matter what you are doing, keep the Quran close to you. If you’re a doctor, you can recite whilst doing admin work. If you’re a mechanic, you can recite whilst fixing cars. If you’re a retail worker, you can recite whilst on the shop floor etc. Quran can be recited at any time, it shouldn’t be confined to the masjid or a special time in the day.
2) Memorisation of Quran – Memoring the Quran is a lifelong mission. If you haven’t started, start now even if you’re a middle-age working man or older. I know of mothers in their 50’s who have completed Hifdh. It doesn’t have to be within one year or two years. It can take some time but be consistent and make sure you pursue this mission. If you’re already hafidh, then continue to strengthen your hifdh and don’t be complacent.
3) Prioritisation of the Quran – Shaykh related a personal story to me. When he was in his 3rd year of residency as a medical doctor, he was also pursuing his Quranic studies in Madinah al Munawwarah, which is where he was placed for residency at the time. He passed his 3rd year of residency and was allocated his 4th year in Riyadh instead of Madinah. This meant that he would have to relocate and move away from his Quran teachers, who were all based in Madinah. He tried to get his placement changed but to no avail therefore, he refused to relocate and was made to redo his entire 3rd year of residency. Shaykh mentioned that he did not regret this one bit. His family and friends were distraught for him but Shaykh said he felt so happy that he was able to remain in the city of our Beloved ﷺ and continue to study the Quran.
This then opened doors for him that he could never have imagine. The lesson here is: if you prioritise the Quran, Allah will make everything else fall into place: your job, your life, your family etc.
4) If Allah has blessed you with the Quran, be an example for people and encourage them too. Make your life such that others know you because of the Quran and nothing else, not medicine or any other reason. Just the Quran.
5) If Allah has blessed you with the knowledge of the Quran, don’t be stingy with it. Go and teach people and invite them to the book of Allah. The best of people are those who benefit others and the best of people are those who learn and teach the Quran, as our Prophet ﷺ mentioned.
